The country's parliament has announced sweeping reforms.
Cuba may embark on the most sweeping economic reforms since the 1959 revolution. According to Reuters, the country’s parliament unanimously approved a reform package that calls for the privatization of a significant portion of the economy and an expansion of the role of private business.
The reforms were supported by the Communist Party and the country’s former leader Raúl Castro. The approved measures call for the transformation of state-owned enterprises into private joint-stock companies, as well as the opening of the real estate and financial sectors to business.
In addition, the document authorizes the sale of state property to both Cuban and foreign individuals and legal entities, including Cubans living abroad. According to Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, the package of 175 measures views the market as “an instrument for the efficient allocation of resources.”
Despite the reforms, the country’s leadership emphasizes that it is not abandoning the socialist path. President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the changes are aimed at improving the existing model, not dismantling it.
“We are not abandoning socialism,” he emphasized, noting that Cuba continues to face the consequences of U.S. sanctions and the economic blockade.
According to Marrero, the main goal of the reforms is to improve the population’s quality of life.
Cuba is experiencing the most severe economic crisis in its entire post-revolutionary history. The situation has deteriorated significantly following cuts in oil and fuel supplies. Many regions of the country experience regular, prolonged power outages, and transportation problems are seriously complicating citizens’ daily lives.
