J.D. Vance canceled his trip to Switzerland.
Peace talks between the U.S. and Iran, which were scheduled to take place on June 19 at the Burgstock ski resort in Switzerland, will not take place. This was announced by the Swiss Foreign Ministry, according to Radio Liberty.
The ministry’s statement said that Switzerland “remains ready to facilitate these talks.”
On Thursday, the White House announced that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance would not travel to Switzerland because the details of the talks had not yet been finalized. “The logistics of these talks have never been simple or predictable,” said a White House spokesperson.
Iran has not yet commented on the cancellation of the talks.
It was previously reported that the parties would sign a memorandum of understanding at the meeting in Switzerland; however, on Thursday, the presidents of the U.S. and Iran signed the document remotely. As a result, it was planned that at the meeting, members of the negotiating teams would attempt to develop a detailed plan for implementing the memorandum.
The memorandum, signed on June 18, is the first step toward ending the armed conflict between the two countries. The document consists of 14 points.
According to the memorandum, a ceasefire on all fronts takes effect immediately (including Lebanon, where Israel is conducting operations against the Iranian-backed group “Hezbollah,” which is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and Israel), as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the gradual lifting of the naval blockade of Iran. In addition, Washington has committed to effectively suspending sanctions on Iranian oil immediately, without waiting for a final agreement.
In the document, Iran confirms that it “will never produce nuclear weapons.” The parties agreed that all issues related to the nuclear program, including the fate of enriched uranium, will be addressed in the final agreement, which they expect to reach within 60 days. A mechanism for the operation of the Strait of Hormuz will also be developed during this time.
