Details Have Emerged Regarding The Assassination Of The Former Mayor Of Belgorod In Ukraine

Konstantin Polezhaev was struck by a drone.

The former mayor of Belgorod and ex-vice governor of the Belgorod Region, Konstantin Polezhaev, who went off to fight after being convicted in a bribery case, has died.

Relatives are not discussing the circumstances of Polezhaev’s death, but Shot propagandists report that he was seriously wounded as a result of a drone strike. He was in critical condition for some time, but doctors “were unable to save” the former official.

Polezhaev was 53 years old. He was born in Belgorod and received his higher education in Ukraine—at the Kharkiv State Automobile and Road Technical University. He had worked in the Belgorod city administration since 2013. In 2015, he became mayor of the city, and in 2019 he moved to the regional government; during the war, he served as vice governor (he was the deputy to Vyacheslav Gladkov) and oversaw the preparation of shelters and the restoration of damaged housing.

In 2023, Polezhaev resigned, and shortly thereafter he was detained and charged with accepting a bribe. Investigators believed that he had received two cars worth 18 million rubles (9.6 million hryvnias) from the director of a construction firm and, in exchange, acted as the company’s “patron” in matters related to contracts for major repairs. Polezhaev was sentenced to five years in a penal colony and fined; after that, he signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the aggressor country and went to fight against Ukraine.
