WSJ: What's Behind The Panic Over AI?

A mathematical model cannot rebel on its own.

In recent months, the media has been reporting more and more frequently on artificial intelligence systems that are allegedly capable of getting out of their creators’ control. These are “swarms” of autonomous agents capable of carrying out large-scale cyberattacks, circumventing restrictions, and acting without human intervention, according to The Wall Street Journal.

However, this rhetoric may conceal more than just security concerns. WSJ columnist Gabriele Mazzini believes that attention should first and foremost be focused on those who talk about the threats.

“When company executives publicly claim that the systems they created, developed, and launched have suddenly spiraled out of their control, a healthy dose of skepticism is simply essential,” the author writes.

The tech industry is trying to change its public image. In recent years, Silicon Valley companies have faced criticism over the very real consequences of their activities, including privacy concerns and the negative impact of social media platforms on the mental health of young people.

Now, the leaders of the largest AI companies are increasingly stepping forward to warn the public about the dangers of their own technology. Mazzini notes that this has become particularly noticeable in the run-up to their IPOs. They hope to raise billions of dollars from investors.

“They want to convince us that they no longer intend to operate according to the ‘move fast and break things’ principle and are instead ready to become vigilant defenders of humanity against a technological apocalypse,” the author notes.

At the same time, the technology itself is not capable of “rebelling” against humans on its own. The decisions, mistakes, and consequences of such systems still rest with the people and companies that create and use them.
