Belarus Is Closing Its Embassy In Finland

The diplomatic mission in Helsinki began operations in 2011.

Minsk plans to close its embassy in Helsinki, according to an entry in the National Register of Legal Acts, which lists Government Resolution No. 424 of August 20, “On the Closure of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Republic of Finland.”

The text of the legal act has not yet been published. The press service of the Council of Ministers has also not reported on the decision.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on February 26, 1992. On October 1, 2010, a branch of the Finnish Embassy in Lithuania was opened in Minsk. The Belarusian diplomatic mission in Helsinki began operations on December 5, 2011.

According to information on the diplomatic mission’s website, its mandate also extends to Denmark. Alexei Samosuev has served as ambassador since 2018.

On July 3, 2026, a notice appeared on the diplomatic mission’s website—as noted by “Pozir”, a notice appeared on the mission’s website announcing a “temporary suspension of operations.” No details were provided.

“Starting in August <…>, we ask that you direct consular inquiries to other Belarusian diplomatic missions abroad, specifically the Consulate General <…> in Daugavpils or the embassy in Stockholm,” the press release stated.

There was no mention of the ambassador’s departure, but as of now, the institution’s website contains no information about contact persons.

Finland, as a member of the European Union, does not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus. The EU has imposed sanctions on representatives of his regime.
