In Germany, there is a debate over whether it is possible to protect airplanes from drones. The discussion, as reported by Defence Express, arose following an incident involving Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig Airport.

It is noted that small FPV drones can easily penetrate even secured facilities—both civilian ones classified as critical infrastructure and military ones. A recently established research center based at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) is responsible for developing and evaluating technologies to protect airports, public events, and critical infrastructure facilities in Germany. It has joined the ranks of institutions addressing this issue.

Government officials emphasize that the threat posed by drones is part of the “shadow war of the 21st century.” Russia has frequently exploited this threat recently by flying unmarked drones over key sites, including military installations. In particular, drones flew over the Arrow 3 missile defense system, which Germany acquired from Israel. Despite attempts to shoot them down, the drones left the scene undamaged. This was followed by an incident involving a Ukrainian aircraft, which provided further evidence that the protection of such facilities is urgently needed.

At the same time, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense Mitko Müller, it is “impossible” to ensure 100 percent round-the-clock protection “across tens of thousands of kilometers of perimeter.”

However, there are effective solutions, such as the IDAS-PRO research project. The authors noted that, as part of this project, final tests of a system demonstrator designed to counter small drones were conducted last year.

“The system combined various radar systems and the like, as well as electronic warfare capabilities and anti-drone drones, to ensure a full cycle from detection to identification and counteraction against unmanned aerial vehicles,” the article states.
