Belarusian Medical Professionals Provided An Update On The Victims Of The Attack On A Bus Near Bryansk

The necessary procedures to remove the shrapnel were performed.

The children who were injured in the Bryansk Region are in hospital rooms with their parents and are in satisfactory condition. The necessary surgeries to remove shrapnel have been performed, according to the Ministry of Health.

Four of the injured children are at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center (RSPC) for Pediatric Surgery.

“The children are doing fairly well right now. The four of them who are in the ward have undergone surgeries to remove shrapnel. They are in a ward with their parents and are in satisfactory condition,” said the head of the RSPC Konstantin Drozdovsky.

The child who was transported to Belarus on a ventilator, in serious condition with severe injuries, remains in the intensive care unit:

“He has undergone surgeries. He regained consciousness yesterday and is breathing on his own. Of course, he still has a long way to go before he recovers, but he is with his mother and is feeling pretty good.”

The surgeries on the injured children were performed by a multidisciplinary team. The team included pediatric surgeons, a maxillofacial surgeon, an ENT surgeon, trauma surgeons, hand surgeons, and an ophthalmologist—a total of about 30 specialists, according to Drozdovsky.

“We’re dealing with shrapnel injuries, so they’ll spend their postoperative recovery period here with us. As soon as we’re able to discharge them and send them home, we’ll do so,” said the head of the Regional Scientific and Practical Center.

On June 21, a sports delegation visited the children at the hospital, including the head of the soccer federation Yevgeny Buloychik and the coach of the Belarusian national team Viktor Gancharenko.

“The young patients injured in the Bryansk Region are students at Children’s and Youth Sports School No. 2 in Rechitsa and members of a local dance studio. The children were on their way to a sports training camp, so the attention from the Ministry of Sports, the Football Federation, and the national team’s head coach is especially meaningful to them,” the Ministry of Health noted.

As a reminder, the tragedy occurred on the morning of June 17 near the village of Rudnya, not far from the town of Pochep in the Bryansk Region of the Russian Federation—45 km from the border with Ukraine. According to Russian officials, a drone struck the bus, which was carrying 43 passengers. Six people were injured; a pregnant woman—the wife of a coach at the Rechitsa Children’s and Youth Sports School No. 2—was killed.

The Investigative Committees of Russia and Belarus have opened criminal cases (in Russia, on charges of a terrorist attack). The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other things, stated that “Belarusians are absolutely prohibited from traveling to conflict zones, areas of military operations, and adjacent regions.”

Late in the evening on June 17, the Belarusian children returned home to Rechitsa. On the morning of June 18, six of the injured were transported to Belarus by ambulance.

The Ukrainian General Staff denies any involvement in the strike on the bus, emphasizing that “during the specified period, the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not use unmanned aerial vehicles against targets in the Bryansk region.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also declared that the Ukrainian side was not involved, citing the conclusions of international experts. He expressed confidence that this incident was a provocation by the Russian side aimed at dragging Belarusians into the war.
