The European Parliament Has Called For Sanctions Against The Georgian Authorities

The EU may also revoke the visa-free regime.

The European Parliament adopted a report criticizing the situation in Georgia by an absolute majority. The document notes that parliamentarians “express their full solidarity with the Georgian people, who continue to fight for a European and democratic Georgia” against the backdrop of the country’s changed course toward European integration.

According to the European Parliament’s report, the Georgian authorities are criticized for arresting demonstrators and dissidents, beating and torturing protest participants, restricting the work of the media and NGOs, violating the rights of minorities, using the Administrative and Criminal Codes as “repressive tools,” and employing “excessive force” against demonstrators, including the possible use of “chemical weapons.” This refers to the dispersal of anti-government demonstrations and rallies between 2004 and 2025. 436 members of parliament voted in favor of adopting the report, while 145 voted against it.

The European Parliament demanded the repeal of all “repressive laws.” In the event of a refusal, the parliamentarians recommend that the European Council and the European Commission “impose targeted sanctions against those responsible for violating democratic norms,” including the founder of GM Bidzina Ivanishvili, as well as party leaders, judges, and prosecutors.

The document notes that the European Union’s executive branch’s response to the developments in Georgia remains insufficient against the backdrop of what the report’s authors describe as an accelerating “authoritarian consolidation of power”.

If no measures taken against the Georgian leadership lead to an improvement in the situation, the European Parliament considers it necessary and appropriate, as a last resort, to “revoke the visa-free regime with the EU for the entire population of Georgia.”
