The UK king and the US president exchanged jokes.
During a gala dinner in the United States, King King Charles III and President Donald Trump exchanged a series of jokes that noticeably lightened the atmosphere of the official event. However, it was the British monarch's ironic quip about the "French language" that drew the most attention, BBC reported.
In his speech, Charles III reacted to Trump's widespread thesis about the role of the United States in world history.
"You recently pointed out that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German," the king said, before adding with a smile:
"I dare say that if it were not for us, you would be speaking French...!"
Karl III did not stop there. He also recalled the events of the burning of the White House in 1814, joking that it was a "British attempt to rebuild" the U.S. president's residence.
Trump was also not left out and began his remarks by complimenting the monarch on his speech to Congress, adding jokingly, "You made the Democrats stand up - I could never have done that."
