The move strengthens the U.S. position.
The United Arab Emirates has announced its withdrawal from OPEC and OPEC+, dealing a major blow to the largest oil alliance and its informal leader, Saudi Arabia. The decision comes amid an energy crisis caused by war with Iran and instability in global markets, writes (translated by Charter97.org).
UAE Energy Minister Sukhail al-Mazroui said the move was the result of a review of the country's current and future oil production strategy. He said the decision was purely national in nature and had not been discussed with other states, including Saudi Arabia.
The withdrawal of a key member could weaken the unity of OPEC, which has traditionally sought to demonstrate a coherent position despite internal disagreements.
Additional tension is being created by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route through which about a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies pass. Due to threats and attacks from Iran, supplies are already complicated.
The UAE believes their decision will not have a significant impact on the market precisely because of the current instability in the region.
Politically, the move strengthens the US position. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously criticized OPEC for overpricing oil and linked military support for Gulf countries to their pricing policies.
The UAE's decision also reflects growing discontent within the region. Abu Dhabi said the Gulf allies were not actively supporting the country amid attacks from Iran.
Experts say the UAE's withdrawal could be the start of a deeper rift within the oil alliance and change the balance of power in the global energy market.
