Kim Jong-un Confirmed The Practice Of "self-liquidation" Of North Korean Soldiers In Ukraine

The dictator praised their actions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has confirmed a policy requiring soldiers to commit suicide on the battlefield to avoid capture, during Russia's war against Ukraine.

As Bloomberg, speaking at an event to unveil a memorial in Pyongyang for North Koreans killed in Ukraine, Kim twice mentioned the soldiers who committed suicide and praised their actions.

"Heroes who did not hesitate to choose suicide to defend a great honor. They expected no compensation even though they performed outstanding feats. They died a heroic death," he said.

Ukrainian intelligence had previously reported that North Korean soldiers were committing suicide to avoid capture.

Kim Jong Un signed a military pact with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2024 that included a mutual defense clause. South Korean and Western intelligence agencies estimate that Pyongyang has sent at least 10,000 soldiers and tens of thousands of containers of weapons to Russia to fight Ukraine. North Korea is believed to have suffered heavy casualties, with thousands killed in the fighting.
