NI: Secrets Of The Russian Navy Have Fallen Into Ukrainian Hands

A Ukrainian hacker group claimed to have obtained a large cache of classified documents on Russian ships and submarines. As part of Operation “Poseidon,” scientific, technical, and design materials related to approximately 70 Russian Navy projects—currently under development or undergoing modernization—were stolen, according to The National Interest (translation by the website Charter97.org).

According to the published data, access to the documents was gained after a cyberattack on several Russian enterprises and research centers associated with naval technologies. Among them are the “Rubin” and “Malachite” design bureaus, as well as the “Elektropribor” and “Okeanpribor” organizations.

The documents contained information on Project 636.3 “Varshavyanka,” Project 949AM “Antey,” and Project 955M “Borey” submarines, as well as Project 22350 frigates. According to the hackers, some of the files were classified as “secret” and “top secret.” The documents included technical specifications, schematics, operating manuals, system algorithms, test results, and equipment reliability data.

“The group stated that it had obtained technical specifications, operating manuals, structural and functional diagrams, algorithms, and test programs,” the published report states.

The most serious problem for the Russian Navy may arise in the long term. The diagrams obtained could reveal the ships’ design features, the layout of internal systems, and technical vulnerabilities. This could potentially allow an adversary to more accurately determine methods for detecting and engaging Russian ships and submarines.

In addition, the documents may reveal the extent to which the Russian defense industry relies on foreign equipment and components. Such information could help identify supply chains and intensify sanctions pressure.

At the same time, the direct impact of the leak on the war in Ukraine will likely be significantly weaker. The bulk of the Russian fleet operates outside the Black Sea, and the Black Sea Fleet has already suffered significant losses.
