Rutte: NATO Is Deliberately Hiding From Putin What The Invocation Of Article 5 Would Entail

The Alliance has all the necessary capabilities to respond to the increase in hybrid attacks by the Russian Federation.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin understands what invoking Article 5 of the NATO Treaty could lead to and what the consequences would be, but the Alliance is deliberately concealing its “red lines.”
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in an interview DPA. “We will never specify exactly what triggers Article 5. This ambiguity exists, and it will remain. But the Russians, I assure you, clearly understand what it will be,” he said.
The Secretary General emphasized that the alliance has a number of options for responding to Russian actions below the Article 5 threshold, and suggested that some of them may remain undisclosed.
“We have all the necessary response options. This won’t always be made public… Examples of this were measures aimed at disrupting Moscow’s shadow fleet transporting sanctioned petroleum products, and NATO’s Operation Baltic Guardian, launched in response to damage to critical undersea cables,” Rutte said.
He also noted that “these hybrid attacks are a clear sign of Russia’s desperation” in the face of heavy losses in Ukraine, as Kyiv “is getting better and better at striking deep inside Russia.”
At the same time, Rutte emphasized that Europe must “strengthen” its defenses, warning of a conflict “on two fronts” if China were to launch military action against Taiwan, suggesting that this would force Russia to attack Europe:
“For all these reasons, we must take a step forward in Europe. That is exactly what we are doing.”
