France Has Decided To Include Latvia In The Nuclear Deterrence Initiative

Paris is beginning negotiations.

French leader Emmanuel Macron has agreed to begin negotiations with his country regarding Latvia’s accession to the French nuclear deterrence initiative. France has also pledged to strengthen its presence in Latvia.

This was announced by Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, according to Reuters.

“I have been in active contact with the President of France regarding closer cooperation between Latvia and France in the fields of security and defense. President Macron agreed to begin negotiations with Latvia on our country’s accession to the French nuclear deterrence initiative,” the Latvian prime minister said in a statement.

He also added that Macron expressed his commitment to strengthening France’s military presence in Latvia, particularly in the area of air defense.

It is noted that this step came after Riga agreed to abstain from voting on an agreement among the 27 EU member states to remove two Russian oligarchs from the sanctions list – Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman.
