Mobilization will take place in a new way.
Ukrainian authorities are preparing “radical” changes to the mobilization process, which will, in particular, affect the draft age. This was stated by Roman Kostenko , secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence , during an appearance on the program “Lviv Speaks,” as noted by New Voice.
According to him, the government is looking for new ways to attract people to the military, since the current financial incentives are not helping to increase the number of contract soldiers.
“As for motivation: we see that certain monetary incentives have been introduced for contract soldiers, but this isn’t increasing their numbers. The numbers are either declining or remaining at the same level. That’s why I know that some radical measures will now be implemented. Discussions are already underway, and, as far as I know, changes are being made regarding the draft age. I won’t go into details—I think they’ll announce this later: both regarding the draft age and regarding mobilization itself. “But I know the process is underway,” Kostenko said.
At the same time, he declined to specify whether the age threshold would be lowered or raised. Kostenko merely noted that this should subsequently be officially announced by the Ministry of Defense or the General Staff of Ukraine.
The politician also stated that the authorities do not intend to abandon compulsory mobilization. He noted that a complete transition to a voluntary draft system is not currently planned. In addition, Kostenko denied rumors about the possible cancellation of deferments for parents of three or more children. According to him, there are “no such legislative initiatives, nor are any anticipated in the near future.” The MP also emphasized that there will be no changes regarding the mobilization of women, and their service in the military will remain strictly voluntary.
