Ottawa will respond to U.S. tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney promised the U.S. a "dollar-for-dollar" response to the imposition of 50 percent tariffs totaling approximately $20 billion. This was reported by The Guardian.
The tariffs, which were originally scheduled to take effect on Wednesday, were postponed for three days to allow for further negotiations, but the parties were unable to reach an agreement on reducing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. The new tariffs will affect about 5% of Canadian exports to the U.S.
According to Carney, the talks collapsed due to “unfair” changes in the U.S. proposals. The U.S. side, in turn, accused Canada of attempting to secure additional concessions at the last minute.
The negotiations have been suspended, and no new rounds are planned, the Guardian reports.
The economic consequences could affect already vulnerable sectors, leading to store closures and job losses, but experts believe the main blow will be to political relations between the allies.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to make Canada the 51st state, which has caused outrage in Ottawa. A petition demanding the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador has gathered about 248,000 signatures, and Carney has repeatedly emphasized that “America has changed” and that relations between the U.S. and Canada will never be the same again.
