Trump will kick off the competition from the presidential limousine.
U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will take part on Sunday in the opening ceremony of the “IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix,” which will take place right on the streets of Washington. Trump will start the race from the presidential limousine, according to Associated Press.
The race track will run through the center of the U.S. capital, including along Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House. IndyCar race cars will accelerate to nearly 320 km/h and speed past the city’s main landmarks.
“These beautiful cars will make freedom roar at full throttle. It will be freedom roaring like never before,” Trump said while promoting the event.
The race is part of a large-scale program celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. This year, the Trump administration has already organized a festive fireworks display, military flyovers, a UFC fight on the White House grounds, and other spectacular events.
Before the races, spectators will also be treated to an air show featuring military aircraft. The organizers hope to turn the race into a large-scale sporting spectacle filled with American symbolism.
Hosting the competition required significant preparation of the city’s infrastructure. More than 200 manhole covers were welded shut on the streets of Washington to prevent the powerful race cars from lifting them off the road at high speeds.
The race was actively supported by Trump’s longtime acquaintance Roger Penske—owner of the IndyCar Series. His company covered the bulk of the costs for building the track and upgrading the streets.
