The U.S. Plans To Sharply Increase Production Of Tomahawk Missiles

The U.S. Navy has awarded Raytheon a seven-year contract worth $22.9 billion to significantly increase production of Tomahawk cruise missiles. This was reported by Reuters on Monday, August 17.

Under the agreement, Raytheon is to increase annual Tomahawk production from the current approximately 60 missiles to more than 1,000 units per year.

Acting U.S. Secretary of the Navy Hung Kao stated that U.S. authorities have urged defense contractors to accelerate munitions production to ensure the military has the necessary stockpiles of precision-guided weapons.

Raytheon noted that the seven-year contract will allow the company to significantly expand its production capacity and increase missile deliveries to the U.S. military.

The new contract is a continuation of the framework agreement between the U.S. military and Raytheon, signed in February. At that time, the company announced its intention to increase production of Tomahawk missiles from approximately 60 to 1,000 units per year.

According to Reuters, the U.S. is seeking to replenish its stockpiles of high-tech weapons after significant depletion due to support for allies, as well as the use of munitions during combat operations.

On August 4, the agency reported that the United States had depleted most of its stockpile of long-range missiles during the five-month war with Iran. A Reuters source stated that the U.S. had used nearly half of the world’s stockpile of Tomahawk cruise missiles.
