The trial of Nicolás Maduro and his wife will begin next year.
On July 22, a New York court set June 1, 2027, as the date for the start of the trial on the merits in the case of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores. This was reported by Reuters.
Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein set the trial date at the request of attorneys for both sides. Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, did not speak during the 15-minute hearing. Both have previously pleaded not guilty.
Defense attorney Barry Pollack stated that he would seek to have the case dismissed, arguing that Maduro, as the head of a sovereign state, should enjoy immunity from prosecution.
Maduro faces four charges, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
As a reminder, on January 3, 2026, the U.S. military conducted a raid in Caracas, Venezuela, and captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores. Since then, they have been held in a detention center in New York.
