On August 25, Belarus's Independence Became Law

35 years ago, the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR made a historic decision.

On August 25, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR granted the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Belarus the status of a constitutional law.

This declared the supremacy of the Belarusian Constitution and laws over the so-called “union” ones.

The vote took place at a session convened immediately after the defeat of the August coup in Moscow. Under pressure from the opposition BNF faction, led by Zenon Poznyak, a majority of the Supreme Council deputies voted in favor of Belarus’s de jure independence. De facto, Belarus gained independence in December 1991, following the signing of the Belovezh Accords, which led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

August 25 is not officially celebrated in Belarus, whereas in Ukraine, for example, this very event—the Declaration’s adoption as a constitutional law—is observed as the national Independence Day.
