Preparations for the necessary infrastructure in Lithuania are proceeding ahead of schedule.
Berlin continues to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank by deploying its troops to Lithuania. According to the publication Bild, around 5,000 Bundeswehr personnel are scheduled to be permanently stationed there by the end of 2027. All of them will be part of the 45th Tank Brigade. Part of the contingent—about 1,800 soldiers—is already deployed in the country and is taking part in the “Freedom Shield” exercises in June at the Pabradė training ground, located just 20 kilometers from the border with Belarus.
Preparations for the necessary infrastructure are proceeding ahead of schedule. The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense Robertas Kaunas noted in an interview with WELT that the first phase of construction is ten months ahead of schedule.
“We can assume that Germany and Lithuania will be ready by the end of 2027 at the latest, if not sooner. The brigade will be fully equipped and ready,” Kaunas emphasized.
In addition to military facilities, civilian infrastructure—including residential buildings, medical centers, schools, and kindergartens—is being built in Lithuania for German service members and their families. The minister called this project “a milestone for German-Lithuanian relations,” playing a key role in deterrence along the alliance’s eastern borders. Within the Bundeswehr itself, the deployment of the 45th Brigade is being called a historic event, as German troops have never been stationed abroad on a permanent basis since World War II.
