This is the second time in six months.

The engine cowlings on the second engine of a Red Wings Sukhoi Superjet 100 broke off during flight. The incident marks another serious aviation incident and is already the fourth recorded case of engine cowlings detaching, as well as the second in the past six months, according to the Telegram channel “Aviatorshchina.” The latest incident occurred on the afternoon of June 18. Immediately after takeoff, the crew noticed that the cowlings on the second engine had come off. The aircraft captain decided to return to the departure airport. After running out of fuel, the plane landed safely in Yekaterinburg.

The previous similar incident, as reported by The Moscow Times, involved a Superjet aircraft operated by Rossiya Airlines. Similar incidents had also been previously recorded on two Azimut Airlines aircraft. Investigations by Rosaviatsiya into all three cases led to the same conclusion: the cause was the failure to secure the cowling latches after maintenance was performed. The commission determined that specialists from PJSC “Yakovlev,” who performed maintenance on the aircraft in Vladivostok, failed to comply with the technical operations manual’s requirements when securing the cowl latches. Based on the investigation’s findings, Rosaviatsiya recommended that PJSC Yakovlev equip its Superjet 100 fleet with additional safety devices and revise its documentation. Airlines and maintenance service providers were instructed to strengthen oversight of maintenance and preflight inspections.
