Germany And Poland Are Expanding Their Defense Cooperation

The defense ministers of both countries signed a new military agreement.

Berlin and Warsaw have pledged to each other even closer cooperation and deeper military collaboration. “Aware of the tragic history of the 20th century, we bear a special responsibility for our region and our continent—as NATO allies and partners in the European Union,” stated the foreign ministers of Germany and Poland, Johann Wadephul and Radosław Sikorski, on Wednesday, June 17, on the occasion of the German-Polish Forum in Berlin. The event was attended by about 700 people and took place on the 35th anniversary of the signing of the 1991 bilateral Treaty on Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, according to the dpa news agency.

At the same time, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Polish counterpart Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz signed a new military agreement in Warsaw. In doing so, the countries are taking responsibility for their future in Europe, Pistorius noted. Kosiniak-Kamysz pointed out that the agreement opens up new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of cybersecurity and advanced technologies.

The parties commit to supporting one another within the EU and NATO. Poland and Germany also intend to cooperate more closely in developing military capabilities and the defense industry. In addition, joint military exercises are planned.

The Polish Ministry of Defense further emphasized the importance of military logistics, infrastructure, and cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. However, the agreement does not include mutual security guarantees similar to those enshrined in the 2025 Polish-French treaty.

For their part, the foreign ministers of the two countries called for the development of transportation links and cross-border infrastructure. “Together, Germany and Poland form the foundation of European defense and NATO’s deterrence against the Russian threat,” said Wadeful. “Those who invest in German-Polish railways are simultaneously investing in friendship and defense.”
