There have been disagreements between the two in the past.
Ukrainian billionaire and president of soccer club Shakhtar Rinat Akhmetov in an interview with The Guardian spoke about his relationship with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and assessed his actions during the war.
Answering the journalist's question about his relationship with the head of state, Akhmetov recalled that in the past there had been disagreements between the two over policies related to oligarchs. However, according to him, there have been no conflicts between them since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
The businessman said that he last met with Zelensky on February 23, 2022 - the day before the war began. Despite the absence of face-to-face meetings since then, Akhmetov emphasized that he is constantly in Ukraine and the president is aware of his activities to support the country.
Akhmetov believes that Ukraine was able to withstand thanks to the courage of its citizens, the Armed Forces, international support, as well as the steadfastness of the president himself. He noted that Zelensky did not leave the country at a critical moment, stayed together with Ukrainians and showed himself as a man of strong character.
"He is doing everything possible to protect the sovereignty, independence and freedom of Ukraine," Akhmetov said. The businessman also called the opportunity to give interviews to foreign journalists in Kiev one of the merits of the current president.
