Britain's King King Charles III on April 28, during a speech at a state dinner in the East Room of the White House, responded with humor to remarks U.S. President Donald Trump made earlier at the World Economic Forum in Davos. A video of the monarch's speech was published by Fox News channel on YouTube.

In January, Trump, discussing the US role in World War II and commenting on the idea of "buying" Greenland, said that without Washington's help, Europeans "would be speaking German and maybe a little Japanese."

A few months later, Charles III publicly reacted to these words.

"You have noticed that if it were not for the United States, the European countries would speak German. And if it were not for us, you would speak French," the monarch joked.

This line caused a strong reaction in the hall - the guests could not contain laughter.

Later the joke was appreciated by French President Emmanuel Macron: he published a fragment of the speech on his Instagram page and commented: "That would be awesome!".
