The U.S. Explained Why Putin Called Trump

It became known what the head of the Kremlin asked for.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin used his phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on April 29 to reiterate that he does not intend to abandon his initial military objectives in Ukraine and present Russian Federation's victory as inevitable. This is according to analysts at the US-based Institute for the Study of War.

So, an aide to Russian leader Yuri Ushakov said that the conversation between Trump and Putin lasted 1.5 hours and during that time Putin told Trump about the current state of the war in Ukraine, fantasizing that Russia has the strategic initiative and is "pushing back" against Ukrainian positions and that Russia will achieve its military objectives "in any case."

As the analysts explain, Putin is falsely trying to portray Ukraine's defenses as crumbling and Russia's victory in Ukraine as inevitable. The Russian dictator has claimed that Russia is performing well on the battlefield to justify his demand for Ukraine's surrender.

But Putin's statement is not true, ISW explains. The Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to impede Russia's significant advances along several sections of the front line, including Russia's priority Donetsk region, and are inflicting increasing damage and heavy casualties on Russian forces. Ukraine is also conducting significant counteroffensives in the south, disrupting Russian plans for a spring and summer offensive. Meanwhile, Russians are increasingly feeling the effects of the war as the Russian economy continues to face significant challenges, casualties continue to rise, and recruiting recruits is becoming more difficult.

"The Kremlin appears to be attempting to mitigate some of these costs by trying to persuade Trump and the West to push Ukraine to surrender, and as part of this effort is glossing over its own military and economic failures," the analysts said.

Why Putin offered a ceasefire for May 9

Putin also offered Trump a short-term ceasefire for May 9, Russia's Victory Day. As ISW notes, such unilateral ceasefires are beneficial to Russia, as the Kremlin uses them to accuse Ukraine of violating the ceasefire and to stockpile drones and long-range missiles for subsequent large-scale attacks.

Analysts recall that Russia has already used such a strategy when it stockpiled weapons for two major series of strikes within 48 hours of the Easter ceasefire.

Putin and Trump's conversation

Trump said after the conversation that Russian dictator Putin was allegedly ready to make a peace deal some time ago but was "prevented by some people."

Trump also said Putin told him that Russian Federation could participate in uranium enrichment if it would help the U.S. get results in Iran. He said he responded that he would prefer Putin be involved in ending the war with Ukraine.
