WP: Vance Has Been Put "on Pause"
J.D. Vance

He's not going to Pakistan to negotiate with Iran.

The US and Iran are resuming talks in Islamabad as early as this weekend, but this time the composition of the US delegation has changed significantly. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance will not be at the meeting.

According to The Washington Post.

The White House decided to send special envoy Steve Whitkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner to the talks. Who, along with Vance, have already participated in previous rounds of dialog.

Vice President JD Vance, who has previously been a key figure in the discussions, will remain in the U.S. this time.

White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt noted that Vance is "on standby." He will fly to Pakistan only if officials "recognize it as a necessary use of his time."

The decision not to send the vice president signals a lowering of expectations for the meeting, the publication noted. Iran also took a similar step. Tehran did not delegate its chief negotiator, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

The Washington Post believes Vance's absence will make it easier for the U.S. administration to level the playing field if Iran again makes unacceptable demands.

But Kushner and Whitkoff's participation could help integrate Israel's strategic goals into the agreement. And that is, first and foremost, ending support for Hezbollah, Hamas and Husitic militants in Yemen.
