Putin Returned Dzerzhinsky's Name To The FSB Academy

The head of the Kremlin admires the Soviet executioner.

Putin has named the FSB Academy after Felix Dzerzhinsky, according to a decree published on the Kremlin website. The Academy's predecessor, the Higher School of the KGB, also bore this name.

The institution was renamed based on the "merits of the Academy's personnel" and Felix Dzerzhinsky's "outstanding contribution to state security," the document says.

The Higher School of the KGB bore Felix Dzerzhinsky's name from 1962 to 1992. In 1992, it was renamed and received its current name.

As journalist Farida Rustamova notes, this is probably the first time Putin has publicly assessed the personality of Dzerzhinsky, the founder and head of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counterrevolution and Sabotage, which existed in the early 20th century. It was succeeded by the NKVD and later the KGB and FSB, noted the The Insider website.
