Instead of fighters, the cannon is powered by automation that quickly and accurately aims at the target.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has deployed the latest Ro'em self-propelled howitzer to fight Hezbollah terrorists. The weapon has already undergone a baptism of fire during a fragile ceasefire in Lebanon.
According to Fox News.
The name of the unit translates from Hebrew as "Thunder" and it is not just another gun, but a real breakthrough, engineers claim. It fires faster, hits more accurately and completely changes the logic of how firepower is used.
The IDF's chief artillery officer Ehud Bibi noted in a commentary for Fox News:
"Ro'em provides new capabilities to the artillery corps and the Israel Defense Forces as a whole, changing the way firepower is used on the battlefield. It marks a historic milestone that ushers in a new era of more accurate, rapid and flexible fire, allowing us to more effectively support troops in the field."
The system was developed by Elbit Systems, which is known internationally as SIGMA. It is manufactured by a subsidiary in South Carolina, USA.
The key features of the Ro'em howitzer are:
crew: only 3 soldiers (instead of the large number of "servants" in older systems);
range of fire: approximately 40 kilometers;
full automation: the system selects the projectile and powder charge itself;
speed: the gun automatically aims at the target and fires at a high rate of fire.
The new weapon allows you to act lightning fast: the howitzer quickly takes position and opens fire. Just as quickly, the Ro'em leaves the launch site, minimizing the risk of retaliation.
Baptism of fire during the truce
Israel has already tested the Ro'em in action. This happened despite a 10-day ceasefire. The military notes: the fire was purely defensive, as the terrorists were preparing attacks against the Israeli army.
According to a statement by the Israel Defense Forces:
"During this operation, troops fired precise artillery fire at several positions of Hezbollah anti-tank and surface-to-surface missile systems, from which attacks were carried out against Israel Defense Forces troops.
The firing was effective, achieved operational results and introduced new artillery capabilities, thereby reducing the threat to Israel Defense Forces troops and Israeli civilians."
