The first "smokeless generation" law is passed.
The UK Parliament has passed a law that bans the sale of tobacco to those born after January 1, 2009.
The Guardian reports The Guardian.
What the law bans
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill has passed through all stages in both houses of Parliament. After receiving royal assent next week, it will become current legislation.
The document stipulates that no one born on or after Jan. 1, 2009, will ever be able to legally purchase tobacco products within the United Kingdom.
Health Minister Wes Streeting called it "a historic moment for the nation's health."
"Children in the UK will be part of the first smoke-free generation, protected from a lifetime of addiction and harm," he said.
Expanding the ban on smoking in public places
The law also gives ministers the power to strengthen the existing ban on smoking in public places. It now applies to playgrounds, areas near schools and hospitals.
Reaction from community organizations
The chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Gazel Cheeseman called it "a crucial turning point for public health".
"The end of smoking and the devastating harm it causes is no longer uncertain - it is inevitable," she said.
Sarah Sleeth, chief executive of the charity Asthma and Lung UK, added that "a smokeless future means the tobacco industry will no longer be able to damage the lungs of the next generation."
About vapes
The law also bans the branding, promotion and advertising of e-cigarettes and nicotine products to children. But some in the vape industry have expressed concern that overly restrictive measures could push former smokers who have switched to vaping back to tobacco.
