To save fuel.
Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, said it will cancel 20,000 flights between May and October in an attempt to cut fuel costs.
The Financial Times writes about it.
The company has already canceled about 120 daily flights and also plans to close selected routes from Munich and Frankfurt for the entire summer season, which runs through mid-autumn.
"In total, 20,000 short-haul flights will be eliminated from the schedule by October, equivalent to about 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel, the price of which has doubled since the start of the conflict with Iran," Lufthansa said in a statement on April 21.
The carrier promised to unveil its updated summer schedule "at the end of April or the beginning of May." The company said it will include "optimization of short-haul flight offers for the entire summer season, which will ensure the stability of the schedule for the flight planning period."
The issues of flight reductions were also discussed during a meeting of EU transport ministers on April 21. Officials were looking for ways to avoid jet fuel shortages after the International Energy Agency warned that stocks could run out within the next six weeks.
The EU is already considering options to respond. According to European Commissioner for Transport Apostolos Tsitsikostas, among the possible solutions is finding alternative kerosene from the United States not normally used in Europe. The possibility of allowing airlines to refuel with large amounts of fuel outside the EU to reduce the risks of disruptions is also being discussed.
"If this crisis continues, we are ready to intervene and provide more flexibility for airlines," Tsitsikostas said.
