Will Trams Be Introduced In The Minsk Metro?

A new project from Lukashenko.

During his visit to the “Belkommunmash” holding company on October 23, Alexander Lukashenko suggested looking into it might be possible to introduce Belarusian-made trams into the Minsk Metro. This was reported by the state news agency BelTA.

Lukashenko was shown a three-section low-floor tram that the company manufactures for Chelyabinsk, Russia. A metro-tram system is being built there: the cars must run both on streets and through underground tunnels. Lukashenko stated that Belkommunmash’s multi-section trams could be supplied to the metro system instead of “purchasing these trains from outside sources.” In other words, this is an attempt to save money on metro rolling stock by replacing it with products from state-owned enterprises.

He has set aside the first half of 2027 to study the issue. The relevant minister, the deputy prime minister, enterprise leaders, and the chair of the so-called Council of the Republic Natalia Kochanova will be working on this. Experts are to submit proposals, including changes to regulatory requirements—that is, likely a relaxation of the requirements for metro rolling stock. Lukashenko promised to make the “necessary decisions.”

For now, this is merely an instruction to explore the technical feasibility. No decisions have been made regarding the purchase of trams for the Minsk Metro or the timeline for their launch.

At the same time, the example Lukashenko cites remains only a project: the metro-tram in Chelyabinsk has not yet been launched.
