Budapest responded.
A group of staff members at the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow and the Consulates General in St. Petersburg and Kazan have been ordered to leave Russia within two weeks. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced this on October 1.
The ministry reported that on that day, Gábor Gergich, Hungary’s chargé d’affaires ad interim in Russia, was summoned to the ministry and informed of the decision. They also lodged a “strong protest” against the “groundless and frankly unfriendly” demand by the Hungarian authorities to expel a number of Russian diplomats. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had previously threatened a “harsh and painful” response.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry responded to Moscow’s decision. “Hungary takes note of Russia’s reaction to our previous move. We are not interested in escalating diplomatic tensions, but we stand by our decision, which was made for reasons of national security. Our diplomatic missions in Russia continue to function fully, and Hungary will maintain its diplomatic presence,” the Hungarian ministry emphasized.
On September 8, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán stated that 10 employees of the Russian embassy were carrying out activities in Hungary that, according to the Vienna Convention, are “prohibited for diplomats.” In light of this, the Hungarian side called on them to leave the country.
