Estonia Has Banned The Transit Of Belarusian Grain Through Its Territory

Tallinn is closing loopholes in its sanctions regime.

Estonia has banned the transit of Russian and Belarusian grain through its territory. This was announced by the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna, according to Reuters (translation by Charter97.org).

“Russia cannot wage an aggressive war and expect us to help maintain its trade flows,” Tsahkna said.

The decision was made amid changes in Russian export logistics. Russian companies have begun converting terminals for fertilizers, coal, and other cargoes at ports on the Baltic and North Seas for grain transshipment.

Businesses took this step following disruptions to shipments through the Black Sea caused by Ukrainian drone strikes. Russian companies are seeking new routes for grain exports, but Estonia’s decision limits the possibilities for transiting grain through its territory.

In recent years, Tallinn has consistently tightened restrictions on trade with Russia and Belarus amid the war against Ukraine.
