An Unknown Fact From Putin's Father's Life Has Been Revealed

The Kremlin leader himself rejected it.

Vladimir Putin’s father Vladimir Spiridonovich was prone to drinking, according to an acquaintance of the president’s family, whose recollections are cited in a book by The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich. Putin himself has said that he never saw his father drunk, according to “Agentstvo”.

A longtime acquaintance of the Gershkovich family attended Leningrad School No. 193 on Baskov Lane with Putin. His mother remembered a poor family that lived nearby. The future ruler’s father was “a heavy drinker,” she recalled.

According to the woman, Putin’s mother, Maria, worked as a night watchwoman at a factory and as a cleaning lady. At parent-teacher conferences, the woman heard little, skinny Vova being scolded for fighting with other children.

One of Putin’s classmates also recalled that he often lost, but never backed down.

The information about Putin’s mother’s hard work and his fights is not new. The 2000 book *In His Own Words* and other biographies stated that Maria Putin worked as a nurse’s aide, a janitor, a stock clerk at a bakery, a lab technician washing test tubes, and a security guard. In 2021, Putin himself recounted that his mother worked as a nurse’s aide at a hospital and as a night watchman.

Putin’s teacher Vera Gurevich described him as a street-smart teenager: “He would get into fights anywhere if someone picked on him!”

It was known that Vladimir Spiridonovich had fought in the war, was seriously wounded, served in factory security after the war, then worked as a foreman, and was a member of the Party committee.

In January 2024, Putin said: “First of all—and I want to emphasize this—I never, ever saw my father drunk. That simply never happened. And I won’t even mention my mother. I never heard a single swear word from him. Ever. Well, I won’t even mention my mother.”

At the same time, Putin’s mother had been one-eyed since her youth because the future Russian leader’s father had gouged out her other eye with a pitchfork in a fit of rage. This little-known episode is recounted in the book *The Tsar in Person* by Roman Badanin and Mikhail Rubin.
