China Has Resumed "panda Diplomacy" With The U.S.

Pin Pin and Fu Shuang have arrived at the Atlanta Zoo.

Two pandas named Pin Pin and Fu Shuang, provided by the Chinese government as part of Beijing’s long-standing tradition of “panda diplomacy,” have arrived in the United States. This was reported on September 27 by CNN.

The flight carrying the pandas departed from China on Sunday morning—one day after the conclusion of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington. Xi Jinping announced the shipment of these animals—which are rare in the United States—on September 24 during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The animals transferred were a male named Ping Ping, whose name means “peace,” and a female named Fu Shuang, whose name translates as “double blessing.” They were settled at the Atlanta Zoo.

Ping Ping has large black patches around his eyes and is particularly good at climbing trees. Fu Shuang, who is seven months younger, has a small tuft of fur on the top of her head and finds food very easily, zoo officials told CNN.

The male is described as brave and gentle, while the female stands out for her particular love of honey, which she “goes crazy” for.

However, zoo visitors will have to wait a little while to see the fluffy guests. According to the zoo, the bears will first spend about a month in the biosecurity zone of the new giant panda complex—during a planned quarantine period.
