The Hungarian Prime Minister Was Pelted With An Egg During A Public Appearance

Magyar chose not to follow Yanukovych's example.

On Saturday, September 26, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar delivered a speech in the city of Szolnok. While he was on stage, an egg was thrown at him from the crowd. It didn’t hit anyone, but only grazed a tripod, according to OBOZ.UA.

This moment was captured in the live stream of the speech, which was broadcast on Madyar’s YouTube channel. The footage shows two security guards suddenly appearing on stage behind the prime minister.

It later emerged that plainclothes police officers had arrested a man who had attempted to throw an egg at Madyar. He said he regretted not hitting the prime minister in the head. The man resisted arrest, so the police pinned him to the ground.

After the incident, MP Andrea Rost took the floor, and then Péter Mályar himself returned.

“Why didn’t we ever do anything like this during the election campaign? Why didn’t we go to other people’s events—neither to boo nor to throw eggs? How can such frustration arise in these people, who can’t even aim properly? It’s not their fault. It’s the immense frustration they’re experiencing. They had a community, a party they’d long believed in, someone they’d long trusted—and it all seems to be falling apart.

“They were lied to—told they’d be sent to war if Fidesz didn’t win—and now they have to realize that no one is being sent to the front, and peace reigns in Hungary,” he said.

The politician posted a video of the incident on his Facebook page and wrote that he understands the disappointment of Fidesz voters, since it turned out that the previous government had lied to them about everything and left them to fend for themselves. At the same time, he asked people to stop throwing eggs or other food items and called on Hungarians to respect their fellow citizens and their homeland.

“Eggs are delicious. I suggest that if the Fidesz holdouts have already decided to throw things at people, they should practice first with a small ball. Today’s score is two to zero,” Magyar wrote.

This isn’t the first such incident

A week ago, Péter Magyar was doused with wine during the Harvest Festival in Seksárd. The politician released a video of the incident and revealed the details.

The footage shows a man taking a sip of his drink and then splashing it toward Madyar. After that, the prime minister’s security guard escorted the man out of the room, and Madyar continued his conversation with the bartenders.

“One of the defeated Orbán supporters found the courage. On our way home from Pécs, we stopped at the ‘Grape Harvest Days’ in Szekszárd at the invitation of local residents.

This ‘gentleman’ was apparently very annoyed that everyone was having a good time, and that we were talking to hundreds of people and taking photos. And even earlier, Péter Magyar was spat on during one of his public events. The incident occurred in Budapest near the West Station as he was heading to a joint press conference with politician David Vitézi. An unidentified elderly man approached from behind and spat on Mádjári’s jacket.

At the time, he reacted calmly to the situation and said he did not consider Hungary a dangerous country.

According to security expert Péter Tarjányi, these recurring incidents point to a dangerous trend: attackers have realized that they can get close to the prime minister, and each such incident lowers the threshold required to commit the next crime.

It should be noted that this attempt to attack Mádjár with an egg occurred almost on the anniversary of the “egg incident” involving former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. On September 24, 2004, an “assassination attempt” using an egg was carried out against the then-Prime Minister of Ukraine. The “perpetrator” turned out to be a 17-year-old economics student Dmytro Romaniuk.

Yanukovych then dramatically fell to the ground, as if a sniper had shot him in the heart from a rooftop, rather than if a fragile egg had been thrown at him.

A criminal case was even opened against Dmytro Romanyuk after he threw an egg at a high-ranking official. At the time, the student faced up to 4 years in prison. Later, according to the source, Romanyuk admitted that the incident was “accidental, impulsive, emotional, and somewhat funny,” but he realized that “the country needs to be changed through systematic steps,” not through such “acts of terror.”

Eleven years later, the former student earned a Ph.D. in economics and decided to devote his career to government institutions. He initially headed the supervisory board of an asset management company and dealt with investment matters. And in October 2019, Dmytro Romanyuk became deputy head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration.
