Where does "Belstat" get its fantastical figures?

A resident of Minsk zharkovskiipavel/post/Ddmb-sHD7EV was never able to find the “average Belarusian.”

“I love reading the latest Belstat reports on the ‘average gross salary in Minsk’ of 4,000 rubles,” he writes. “I look at this figure and sincerely want to meet this legendary average Belarusian. Where does he live?

Why do I see nothing but students around me counting out kopecks for a “Berezka” cheese, or IT workers with lifeless eyes, or factory workers who toil in three shifts for one and a half thousand?”

Other social media users agreed with the author of the post. The website Charter97.org cites some comments:

- Salary statistics in Belarus follow Golubtsov’s law: the factory director eats meat, the workers eat cabbage, but according to the reports, everyone is well-fed and has a perfect balance.

- 4,000? Those are fantastic numbers.

- Exactly. I work at a garment factory—I have to run to the bathroom, I don’t smoke, and when I get home, it’s just to sleep and eat. They even ask me to work on Saturdays—for 1,000–1,100 rubles.

- You’d make that much if you didn’t just have one job. That’s true. But if you work a regular job—2,500 at most.
