The U.S. plans to restore a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and build another one on the island's east coast, according to Reuters reported, citing informed sources. The locations in question are Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland, where the U.S. base Bluie West One was located in the 1950s, and Mestersvig in the east. The latter is currently used by Danish special forces—the elite “Sirius” ski patrol, which guards uninhabited areas.
Last weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the conclusion of an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that, in his words, granted the United States “permanent control” over the island’s security. He explained that the agreement would prevent Washington’s adversaries from establishing military bases in Greenland and would prohibit “sensitive investments” without written approval from the U.S. The text of the agreement has not yet been made public. According to Reuters sources, its details will be finalized before it is signed, which is scheduled to take place at the UN General Assembly in New York. Officials in Copenhagen emphasized that the document will place Arctic security issues under NATO’s oversight, rather than leaving them exclusively under the jurisdiction of the U.S. and Denmark.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1979, when it gained limited self-government. In 2009, it achieved autonomy but remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Currently, more than 100 U.S. military personnel are stationed at the Pituffik Space Station in Greenland—a facility that has been under U.S. control since World War II. As Reuters notes, during the Cold War, the U.S. maintained 17 military facilities and more than 10,000 military personnel in Greenland.
After returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump repeatedly stated that Denmark cannot ensure the security of Greenland, which, he said, is essential to U.S. national defense. Trump claimed that the island is “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.” At the same time, the president assured that he did not intend to establish control over the island by military means. “We’re not going to invade Greenland. We’re going to buy it,” Trump said.
