Negotiating with the Kremlin's leader is naive.
U.S. President Donald Trump should reconsider his approach to Russia’s war against Ukraine and, instead of trying to negotiate with Putin, provide Kyiv with the aid it needs to achieve military victory, writes The Telegraph.
Negotiations with Putin are unlikely, and the West should continue to support Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Washington should focus on strengthening the Ukrainian army rather than seeking a compromise with Moscow.
During his campaign, Trump promised to quickly end the war upon his return to the White House. However, months later, the conflict continues, and diplomatic efforts have not brought it to an end.
At the G7 summit in Evian, France, on June 16, Trump once again stated the need to reach an agreement with Russia. “Russia must make a deal,” the U.S. president said after meeting with Zelenskyy.
Trump also called the massive losses on both sides “absurd” and stated that he intends to do everything possible to end the hostilities.
Zelenskyy, in turn, proposed that Trump organize a meeting with Putin in the U.S. The Ukrainian president believes that such a proposal might prove more appealing to the Russian leader than previous initiatives to hold talks on the sidelines of international summits.
“Attempts to achieve peace exclusively through diplomatic means may give Moscow the opportunity to continue the war on terms favorable to itself,” the article states. The West must create conditions for Ukraine under which Russia will be forced to agree to end the war.
