Lithuania Says It Is Ready To Accept U.S. Nuclear Weapons

This was reported by the Lithuanian Defense Minister.

Lithuania is involved in discussions on the possible deployment of US nuclear weapons on its territory, the country's Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed to reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday, June 2. "Discussions are indeed underway. I don't want to go into details now because they are classified, but the talks are ongoing and Lithuania is certainly not staying on the sidelines," Kaunas was quoted as saying by BNS news agency.

Stressing that nuclear capabilities contribute to deterrence and security, the Lithuanian Defense Minister added that countries should take measures to strengthen their defense and independence, Lithuanian broadcaster LRT reported.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Seimas speaker Juozas Olekas and National Security and Defense Committee chairman Rimantas Sinkevicius said they did not rule out discussing possible amendments to the republic's constitution, which bans the deployment of weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on Lithuanian territory.

Poland denies talks on participation in Nuclear Sharing program

In turn, Warsaw said Poland was not interested in participating in the Nuclear Sharing program to place US tactical nuclear weapons in NATO countries that do not have their own nuclear arsenal, the Polish Radio website reported. Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski said that Poland is engaged in intensive talks with the United States on military issues, but they concern primarily nuclear deterrence, not the Nuclear Sharing program.

The Financial Times wrote earlier about the relevant secret talks. According to the newspaper's sources, Washington is studying the possibility of expanding the number of European states where elements of its nuclear deterrence strategy are stationed, such as dual-capable aircraft that can participate in nuclear missions.
