The Hungarian prime minister also criticized the Budapest Memorandum.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has said that his country could become a platform for talks on ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
He said this in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The Hungarian prime minister was asked about potential security guarantees for Ukraine and what they should look like. Magyar emphasized that Ukraine needs real international guarantees, mentioning the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, in which the U.S. and the great powers guaranteed Ukraine's independence and integrity.
"But these promises have not been fulfilled, because empty slogans are not very helpful. Everything is at stake in Ukraine now. Many people are dying, and it is possible that this country will lose part of its territory. That is why Ukraine needs real, legally valid international guarantees," the Hungarian prime minister said.
The journalists also asked Madjar if sufficient weapons for self-defense were a necessary part of future security guarantees. To which he replied that he did not consider weapons a security guarantee.
"Security guarantees can only come from the international community. Hungary cannot play a decisive role here, this is a matter for the great powers. We can provide diplomatic and humanitarian assistance, and Hungary can also be a place for negotiations," the politician said.
