The crew ignored the warnings.
The US on Tuesday, June 2, disabled an empty oil tanker that was on its way to an Iranian port. Specifically, US forces hit the vessel with a Hellfire missile.
This was reported by CNN, citing a US Central Command (CENTCOM) post on social network X.
According to the statement, the Botswana-flagged M/T Lexie was traveling "in international waters towards Kharg Island" (the island is located in the Persian Gulf and handles up to 90% of Iran's oil exports).
The crew, however, ignored warnings and failed to comply with U.S. orders to impose a blockade on vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports, and as a result, U.S. forces struck.
"Ultimately, a U.S. aircraft disabled the vessel by firing a Hellfire missile into the engine room, preventing the tanker from reaching Iran," U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
CNN notes that U.S. forces similarly disabled a ship that was also headed to Iran last weekend.
CENTCOM also writes that since the beginning of the blockade began in April, six ships have been disabled and another 122 ships have been diverted.
