There may be some suspicious circumstances surrounding the death in Russia of former Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.
This was reported by the influential Russian news outlet “VChK-OGPU”, which is linked to Russian intelligence agencies.
According to the outlet, Ivanov took his own life after meeting with his influential friend, a Chekist.
“Our insiders claim that the death was strange and allegedly occurred immediately after Ivanov’s meeting and late-night get-togethers with Dmitry Schmidt , an advisor-inspector to the director of the FSB of the Russian Federation , with whom they had been friends for many years. It is said that Schmidt himself was hospitalized afterward,” the website reported.
It noted that Ivanov was the only high-ranking representative of the regime whom dictator Vladimir Putin allowed to “retire” without any negative consequences. None of the former minister’s associates were arrested.
The source describes Ivanov as “not particularly intelligent” and “a yes-man under Putin.” According to the report, the former minister began experiencing very serious health problems after his son drowned in the UAE.
“He could barely walk. I don’t know what the illness was, but it definitely wasn’t cancer. His aides helped him get to work. Because of this, rumors began to circulate about alcohol abuse… He gave the impression of a man tormented by terrible pain, and everything was difficult for him to do. Even moving was a struggle, which is why Putin agreed to let him step down from his position as head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation without any repercussions. Later, it seems, he was somehow nursed back to health; he clearly felt much better,” the channel reported.
Ivanov was the same age as Putin; he was 73 at the time of his death. He was a product of the St. Petersburg KGB, just like the Russian dictator. He headed the Russian Ministry of Defense in the early 2000s and served as head of the Presidential Administration at the time of the annexation of Crimea. In 2016, he was dismissed and did not hold any significant positions thereafter.
