Kyiv also wants to establish its own production of such ammunition.
Ukraine has signed a contract with Germany for the supply of 600 missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with the TSN television channel.
According to him, the U.S. is currently capable of producing only about 700 Patriot missiles per year. However, Washington granted Germany a license to manufacture them some time ago, after which German companies began producing these missiles, the Ukrainian leader noted.
“They transferred the licenses to the Germans some time ago. The Germans have now begun production, and we have already signed a contract with them for a substantial amount—600 missiles. This is a good contract—though it will certainly take quite a long time for the missiles to arrive,” — said Zelenskyy.
He also reported that during his latest meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit, he received a positive signal for the first time regarding the possible transfer of licenses to Ukraine for the production of Patriot missiles.
“For the first time, because before it was always: ‘Well, we don’t know, well, maybe, well, we’ll see.’ <...> They said they see an opportunity to resolve this issue for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.
According to him, Ukraine possesses all the necessary technical capabilities to manufacture such missiles in Europe, alongside Germany.
“To do this, I need licenses from the United States. Since I know everyone—all the companies, the entire leadership of European and American companies that are currently focused on Patriot production—we understand that we’ve reached the point where we now need Trump’s personal approval; everyone else agrees,” Zelenskyy stated.
