Iranian authorities have sentenced singer Parasta Ahmadi to 74 lashes for performing at an online concert without a hijab. According to The Guardian, eight members of her team have been sentenced to the same punishment. In addition, all of them are prohibited from leaving the country or engaging in creative activities for two years.
The decision by the Qom Provincial Criminal Court was handed down following the trial of the musicians on charges of offending public morality by producing and publishing “vulgar and immoral content.”
On December 11, 2024, Parastou Ahmadi streamed her concert live on her YouTube channel. During the performance, she wore a black off-the-shoulder dress, her hair down, and no hijab. Under the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran, women are prohibited from performing solo songs in public and from appearing in public places without a hijab. The livestream was viewed by about 500,000 people in just the first 24 hours, and within a few days, the number of views approached 2 million.
