The UN Is On The Verge Of Bankruptcy

Because of the refusal of the U.S. and China to make payments.

The United Nations is facing serious financial difficulties due to delays in mandatory contributions from its largest donors, the U.S. and China. According to The Wall Street Journal, these two countries account for about 42% of the UN's base budget.

It is reported that the US debt exceeds $4 billion. In addition, Washington has cut participation in a number of international programs, including the World Health Organization, explaining that it needs to combat inefficient spending. China, despite a recent payment of $850 million, still owes the organization about $455 million.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that if the current situation continues, the organization could face a shortage of funds as early as mid-August. He said the risk of a financial crisis is very real.

In response to the funding shortfall, the UN has already launched a massive austerity program. In particular, it is cutting jobs, closing individual offices, reducing spending on translation services and peacekeeping operations. The organization is also accelerating the withdrawal of contingents from a number of regions and delaying payments to states providing troops for blue helmets' missions.

The situation is complicated by the UN's funding structure. The organization has no right to borrow money, and a significant part of its budget goes to staff salaries. At the same time, member states regularly expand the list of tasks and programs, not always providing them with the necessary funding.

Washington says it supports international cooperation, but insists on large-scale reforms aimed at reducing costs and improving the efficiency of the organization.
