Britain's Neighboring Country Has Become A "loophole" For Russian Spies

British officials have already alerted her authorities.

Ireland has become a "loophole" for Russian spies into the UK because of its liberal visa policy. British officials have already warned the country about the problem.

As The Telegraph writes, former children's minister in the Irish government and current member of the European Parliament for Dublin Barry Andrews said British officials had warned him about the number of visas Ireland has issued to Russians.

Since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ireland has issued 14,000 visas to Russians - an approval rate of 90 percent.

"Ireland does not have sophisticated intelligence services compared to Britain. The UK fears that Ireland is a loophole because people come to Ireland and we don't have the surveillance capabilities that the UK has," he said.

He noted that there is quite a lot of evidence of illegal Russian activity in Ireland.

Ireland is one of two non-Schengen EU member states that has its own visa procedure. It is a member of the Single Travel Area along with the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

In July, Ireland will gain the EU presidency, which "puts it at risk," Andrews added.

"Ireland is in the crosshairs and I think now is the time to do a thorough review of the visa process for Russians and Belarusians," he said.

He urged immigration officials to check social media profiles and interview applicants.
