Up to 30,000 people are being evacuated in the German city of Pforzheim after a World War II-era aerial bomb was discovered. It is planned to defuse it during the day, reports the news service Tagesschau.
The bomb was discovered during construction in one of the city's neighborhoods. Because of this, authorities decided to evacuate residents within a 1.5 kilometer radius of the discovery. In terms of scale, this is one of the largest evacuations in Germany in recent years, the publication specifies.
Since morning, the police began to go around the houses and check the neighborhood. Some residents do not want to leave their apartments, but authorities warned that they could be fined for doing so. More than 1,500 police officers, firefighters and rescue services were involved in the evacuation. Temporary accommodation centers were also opened in the city, one of which was already overcrowded.
According to the bomb squad, it is a British HC 4000 aerial bomb from World War II weighing 1.8 tons. There are three fuses inside, which experts will have to defuse soon.
