(updated) However, everything is going according to plan.

No one has ever been further from Earth than the astronauts of the Artemis program.

But as the Earth became less and less visible in their "rearview mirror," they kept in constant communication with the mission control center in Houston, Texas. The calm words of the NASA team gave the crew a comforting link to home.

This connection will be lost tonight, the BBC reports.

The astronauts will find themselves behind the moon, where radio and laser signals that allow two-way communication between the craft and Earth are blocked by an Earth satellite.

For about 40 minutes, the four astronauts will be alone, each with their own thoughts and experiences, traveling in the darkness of space. It is a profound moment of solitude and silence.

Artemis pilot Victor Glover said he hopes the world will use this time to unite.

"When we find ourselves over the moon, out of touch with everyone, let's take it as an opportunity," he told BBC News before the mission. - Pray, hope, send your good thoughts and wishes so that we can get back in touch with the crew."
